Smokey Mountain Video

Smokey Mountain is a rubbish dump just outside Manila in the Philippines. It was the dump where rubble from the Second World War was taken. Manila was almost completely destoyed in the fight between the US and Japan. After the war many destitute people settled there and started making a living from the rubbish on the dump. Because it was not well managed, the rubbish on the dump started forming methane gas. It became known as Smokey Mountain.

Today a community of almost 30 000 people live on the dump. They make a living by recycling the rubish others throw away. The city of Manila now wants to sell the site to a consortium who wants to develop a housing project there. The future of the Smokey Mountain community is uncertain. Our video tells their story.

Following a very successful video on the history of mission for the World Council of Churches, Chedza Media was commissioned to film and produce an additional video for the Commission on World Mission and Evangelism. The conference is held in Manila Philippines during March 2012 and leads up to the 7th Assembly of the World Council of Churches in Busan South Korea in 2013.

The video "The Changing face of Mission" tells the story and history of mission in the World Council of Churches. It premiered at the conference and was well received by the 200 delegates.

Material filmed in Manila will now be cut together in a highlights package that will be distributed to delegates and member churches. The material will also become part of the history library of the World Council of Churches.

Chedza Media worked closely with Mark Beach (photo on the left), the Communications Director of the World Council of Churches.

These projects represents an ongoing relationship Chedza Media has with the World Council of Churches of which we are very proud.

New Beginnings nearing Completion
New Beginnings tell the story of three families who moved to Australia in search of a better life. We follow Corrie, a well known and respected sports journalist in South Africa, as he takes his family to a New Beginning. Corrie finds out that making a new beginning is much harder than he thought.

He is soon out of work and the family has to survive off the income his wife makes. But they persevere and through much introspection adjust to their new country.

The documentary also looks at two other immigrant families, one from Zimbabwe and the other from Somalia, who share a similar experience.
